Find Available Domain Names.

April 27, 2008 by Domain Names · 1 Comment

Today I am going to give you 3 ways you can use to find available domain names that you can use for personal use, your website or for investment.

The first most obvious and the one commonly used by most people is to go to any search engine:

  1. Type in “domain names” and enter search.
  2. Click thorough the list of domain name registrars that come up on the search.
  3. Then choosing a registrar that best meets your price criteria and needs.
  4. Using their search form to register your domain name.

As I said earlier this is the most common used method to find available domain names. Another way you can use to find a domain name is to search for:

  1. Names that have already been registered but are on sale.
  2. Or names that have expired and are now free for someone else to use.

Of course you will agree with me that it will be a tedious and very boring task if you had to perform this task manually moving from one site to another trying to find such names.

There are companies out there with a list of these available names that you can easily access to by signing up for a small fee. Most domain registers will allow you access to their domain name after market for a given fee, where you can then be able to find names that were previously registered but are on sale.

You can read more about finding expired domain names here.

The third method you can use to find available domain names is to search for domain names that are on auction. All you have to do is to bid for a given name and if you emerge as the highest bidder when the action closes, you get the chance to pay and secure the name under question.

You can read more on how to find available domain names that are on auction here.

How to Buy Web Domain Names

If you’ve made it here, we understand the issues that have come to your attention. Things like whether or not you need to buy web domain names with a dot com versus a dot net, org, biz, tv, etc. Then of course, the challenges of pricing, not to mention what you’ll name your domain. Should you use hyphens, short words, find specific keywords, and about a hundred other questions we imagine you’ve had at some point in time.

Well, to answer each and every question could take hours on our part, and weeks for you to read. So instead of boring you with a long novel about how to buy web domain names , we’ll keep it short and sweet. Most important, you’ll be able to take these tips, and utilize them at no cost to you. In the end, our goal is to help you anyway we can, and if that has to do with us starting with how to buy web domain names, then that’s where we’ll begin.

  • Finding a good domain Name:

Remember, this is going to be the name people know you by. However, this doesn’t mean you call your domain, "Sleek Catz" if you’re selling dog supplies. You’ll want to have a major keyword (if possible) that notifies others that your site is based off of this industry. The shorter it is the better. If you can score a name like goldcoins.com, you’ve just found yourself a terrific domain name. Even though it has 2 words, it still lets people know that your website is about Gold Coins. Make sense? Good!

  • Which domain name to Buy?

By doing your own research, you’ll find that the dot com domains are worth more than the others. Why? Well, since these were the beginning domains, it presents longevity, originality, and the fact that if there are other similar companies with dot net, dot biz names you were the first. So if your idea is not taken on the dot com market, then grab it. Heck, you might even want to grab the others just so no one else can have the same name on a different level. Learn more on how domain names changes can affect you.

  • How much to spend on your domain names?

This really depends on you. If you’re a single proprietor and won’t be spending thousands of dollars on advertising or other ventures, then the normal costs are fine. However, some companies feel that they need to have the huge name if they want to control the market, and in that case it could cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. For example, if you are into the various necklaces, bracelets, etc., you may be interested in buying http://www.jewelry.com/. We think you get the point though.

  • When it’s all said and done on how to buy web domain names:

People just want to find an easy avenue to your site. If they are typing in your address it’s much easier to remember MySpace.com instead of MyspaceisYourSpace.com. Just take a look at all the top companies all over the Internet. Yahoo, Google, Facebook, eBay, MySpace, ESPN, all utilize small captivating titles. It’s the best way to go, but many times the single or double name is already taken. So be creative, it may take some time, but all of these are great ways to go about buying a domain name. To get you started on how to be creative, here is a good domain name tutorial about registering and hosting domain names to help you out.

  • Other ways to buy web domain names:

One of the best and most profitable way to buy web domain names is to search for expired names. Some sources claim that over 90,000 domain names become available each day. Now that is a huge number!

This are literally good names that you can easily capitalize and use for your own personal or business use. Some of these names have already gained a reasonable PR rank or are attracting organic search engine traffic.

But here is the problem that most people face when they want to buy web domain names :

  • Finding good available domain names on sale.

Without spending hours and hours manually searching through the pile of names as they become available from one place to another.

I found this article this resourceful very useful.

  1. I hope it’s going to help you and show you how to buy web domain names that have already expired.
  2. Another way that you can also buy web domain names is by searching for available domain names

How Domain names work

April 15, 2008 by Domain Names · Leave a Comment

This post will attempt to explain briefly how domain names work once you initiate a purchase or decide to change your name for another.

Each passing day thousands of domain names are registered all the time. At the same time hundreds of names that had previously been registered become available. On the other hand some owners decide to change their domain names. Their are thousands of simple but complex activities and transactions conducted in the domain name industry.

For those who would like to change their domains, there are two steps involved.

  1. Releasing the old name.
  2. Adopting the new one.

Although this process sounds and seems to be easy, sometimes it is inherent with certain difficulties that you should be aware of in order to prepare for such an eventuality.

Whenever there is a domain change, then thousands of Domain name system (DNS) servers around the globe have to be updated. When this is done a series of complex routines allows this request to be forwarded within the DNS servers.

Now the problem is that when the change of domain name takes place, DNS databases are not all updated instantaneously around the world, chiefly the main reason for this is due to caching.

A cache is a set of stored information that is reused so that fresh information doesn’t have to be communicated with every request for a web page or data.

It takes a while before a cache is cleared, refreshed or expires around the DNS server system.

How Domain Dames work.

It may take anywhere between 24 hours to 48 hours (or even more in case of problems) before all the servers are updated globally. The average time is 6 hours but let me point out that this is just an average; the actual time will vary on a case by case basis depending on a number of reasons.

Because of this a number of things might happen:

  1. The IP address pair might not resolve properly and therefore your connection won’t reach the server you want.
  2. Your browser will continue to point to the old one or you would receive an error message that such and address does not exist.

Therefore, now that you have a slight understanding on how domain names work, it is important that when changing your domain name, registering a new name or buying another name you should wait for at least two or so days before you start sending/advertising your new website or business otherwise you may end up creating a bad first impression.

Available Domain Name Search

Available domain name search

Unless you have a highly unusual imagination you may find it increasingly hard to register your first choice for your domain name. As is the case with so many millions of website registered under different names, you may have to go through several choices to find a domain name that isn’t already in use.

But, it’s also true that domains tend to die or expire, why because domain names are leased on a given time frame up to 10 years at most. With time, the name becomes available for use by someone else if the original owner fails to renew their registration and reclaim their right to use that name.

This is why it’s also important to make use of available domain name search tool to help you come up with your desired name. Let face it would you be able to compete with bots that are actively roaming the internet searching for such names ready to add them to their data bank? A human being though so intelligent can only be able to do so much.

By using such tools, you get your desired name in the waiting list and as soon as the name becomes available you get notified so that you can be able to register it before someone else does.

Naturally, there is also competition even on the waiting list for good domain names. Therefore it is important to give some thought to your new domain name and research its availability, but don’t stress over it. The name isn’t everything.

What is in a Name

April 11, 2008 by Domain Names · Leave a Comment

Have you ever really wondered…what is in name?

I know a place called Nyapara Ibere — Don’t even bother searching it on google! — It does not know it exists yet.

In 2007, the most popular baby boy name on baby.com was AIDAN while AVA was the most popular baby girl name.

Now did you know that Aidan, Aiden and Aden are all alternate name for the other? — That they are all spellings of the same name.

Forbes listed Oprah Winfrey on top of the celebrity list.

And on yahoo questions , Shakespeare was voted as the most famous history name.

So really "What’s in a name?" That is the same question that Shakespeare asked in Romeo and Juliet.

As you ponder on that.

Let us relate it to your web site.

Your domain name means quite a lot.

As we very well know, a domain name is associated with an IP address, a numeric identifier that computers and network components use to connect a browser to a web site.

Now I hope you do know that it’s not mandatory that your site has a name. It is mandatory though to have an IP address. If you want you can direct visitors to your website using an IP address. But that can quickly generate difficulties. Just imagine telling your visitors to visit 64.233.167.99 or maybe 216.109.112.135 (If you are curious just type that and see what pops up)

What is in a name?
what is in a name (Picture by Colin McMillen on Flickr.com)

In the early days of the Internet, domain names were chosen carefully in order to help people remember the URL or make it easier for someone to type the name.

But that was then, in the present world, With hotspots on a page, great search engines, social networking and other contemporary tools, the qualities of a good domain name that were a must then, really are not as important now.

If you think I’m joking let me ask you. Do you know your best friends number off head? I probably think you don’t! Why because you saved it to your contacts long time ago and all you do is get the name you saved it under and press dial. That is what bookmarking, social sites and RSS are taking us.

But from a marketing perspective, it still helps to have a good name. It’s still beneficial to have a site called ‘CheapTV.com’ if what you are selling is a selection of inexpensive Television sets. Now someone doing the same business as you but using a domain name like ‘InexpensiveElectronicVisualDisplayDevices.com’ may find it hard to promote his business offline.

The name you choose then may have an effect as to how much traffic your site gets especially during it’s initial stages of growth.

From my own experience having a good name can certainly help. If you have a bad name like mine do not give up, with time and with a bit of extra hard work and marketing coupled with good quality information, products or services that people want, word do go around, soon or later.

But really if you are starting out, why work harder if you can be able to secure a good name now?

As a closing thought, Love them or hate them, the Google company chose well. Their choice of name is a perfect response to Shakespeare question above "what is in a name?

Of course, the fact is that there are millions of web sites around the world like mine here that have awkward names. The reality truth is that you don’t necessarily get the name of your first choice but let that not stop you from accomplishing your dreams.
I know soon or later google is going to index Nyapara Ibere, words do get around, do they? —
